Logroño launches the pilot service of last-mile delivery
The City of Logroño, a Living Lab of the DECARBOMILE project, is actively implementing a pilot of a free-of-charge last-mile delivery system to serve local businesses and their customers. The new delivery service aims to promote more sustainable urban delivery to local stores and markets, as well as to reduce traffic and related emissions. The pilot will run until the end of August 2026, and it aligns with Logroño’s continuous efforts to decarbonise last-mile delivery on its territory under DECARBOMILE.
Smart lockers and cargo bikes at the service of local businesses
To successfully run the pilot, the city has set up 36 smart lockers for use by businesses and residents (4 modules of 9 lockers each) in various commercial areas of the ciy. Therefore, the lockers serve citizens coming to the San Blas Market, a focal point of the city centre, or Paseo de las Cien Tiendas commercial area, and the ZOCO commercial area, as we reported before.
City representatives emphasize that they aim to maintain the decarbonised last-mile delivery system even beyond the duration of the pilot – from September 2026 onwards – thanks to various agreements with local or national logistics and delivery companies.
Furthermore, municipal cargo bikes are made available to local businesses for last-mile deliveries. It will be possible to borrow them at the entrance of San Blas Market, for instance. The City Council will distribute leaflets with information on how to use this delivery service for businesses and customers.
Multifunctional smart lockers
As the free pilot scheme lockers are designed to make delivering easier, they may serve as a new method of delivering orders and goods to the customers outside of business hours.
Furthermore, they allow customers, or even tourists, to use them as luggage storage facility to temporarily store their purchases, using a code provided by the shop. The lockers will be accessed via the ‘PVerde’ app tailored by another project partner Intelligent Parking, which will provide a specific code to the business for use.
The last-mile delivery pilot services will be free of charge for retailers and customers along the project’s duration, for the first four months for local businesses who sign up to them.
